Participant Photo: Successful Displacement
A Dark-eyed Junco successfully displaces another feeding on fallen suet under a suet feeder. The whole interaction happened within seconds, and this was one of the decisive moments where the previously feeding bird is now in the air, having been ambushed by the new bird which has flared its tail and wing feathers. This was also a surprising event for me, because until I photographed this I did not realize that the birds use their tail feathers in this manner.
