I have many house finches and goldfinches in my yard. I just took some pics of a male house finch with “yucky” eyes. I think he has the disease. I informed some of my bird friends about it as well. I will keep an eye on the other finches, but I will clean everything tonight to help fight it from spreading.
I have one finch on my feeder that appears to have serious eye disease. I think he is completely blind. My husband and I stood on each side of him and he didn’t seem to be aware. I’m taking my feeders down now to give them a good cleaning. Any other suggestions?
Hi Tammy, Anytime you see a sick bird, it’s best to take your feeders down for a few days and clean them. Cleaning them regularly (every 1-2 weeks) is the best way to prevent disease, even when you see no sick birds. You can learn more about bird diseases and how best to clean your feeders here.
