Participant Photo: Two squirrels typical in our back yard

We have two types of squirrels in our Flagstaff AZ yard. Lately we had seen only Aberts individuals, but today (11/9/23) this rock squirrel came out of its hole to drink.

The squirrel on the pine-needle-covered ground is an Abert’s, scampering near the bird bath. It looks much like the Abert’s I observed in our yard today (11/9/23). This species remains throughout our winter, temporarily displacing rock squirrels.
