Participant Photo: UNK, sparrow that looks like a first winter Tiaga white crown with a black mask.
An unknown species of sparrow that looks like an first winter Taiga white-crowned sparrow with a black mask * a reddish orange beak.
Any better ideas?

Weird! But cool!
I think I just saw one of these as well! That orange beak was bright against the snow, and the tawny body was almost that of a cedar waxwing in color. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen this bird before. Definitely a sparrow, but doesn’t match any of the sparrows listed as being in Washington State. (‘m in central Washington, in December.)
On further reflection… Could this be a juvenile White-crowned sparrow?
