Participant Photo: White-breasted Nuthatch technique
Additional images:
I don’t know if this is a common practice, but I have at least one White-breasted Nuthatch that uses this technique. It brings a sunflower seed to a wooden railing and stuffs the seed into a crack in the wood. That prevents the seed from moving while the bird bangs it with his bill to crack it open so that the Nuthatch can get at the kernel inside.
