Participant Photo: White-crowned Sparrow on Pinecone Feeder

Surprisingly, the sparrows have been flying up to the peanut butter seed pinecones to snag a bite. Some feed while hovering; others perch on top of the cone or on a nearby branch. It appears they are willing to expend a great deal of energy to access this food. Usually we see them feeding on the ground or in the tray feeder.
