Description

This female purple finch (?) was just hanging out on the edge of the bird bath. Eyes were closed often. Could see the bird’s breathing was labored. She then moved to a platform feeder and was surrounded by mourning doves and didn’t even seem to know they were there. Decided to remove the feeders at that point, and the bird did not fly away until I was a foot away.

Ava Johnson says:

It could be Mycoplasmal conjunctivitis (House Finch Eye Disease). Even though it is rare in Purple Finches. Just in case, take your feeders down for a while and clean them.
