In December we saw this puffy and lethargic goldfinch with messy feathers. Visible breathing. We limited our feeding for a week or two and didn’t see it again. Later we saw a common redpoll similarly puffy, disheveled and hanging at the feeder longer than the others. Again we limited our feeding and did not see any more sick looking birds.

They could have Salmonellosis. It is a disease spread through droppings and saliva and is sadly usually fatal.
