Description

This is a house finch or purple finch (Haemorhous mexicanus or Haemorhous purpureus) that has been visiting my bird feeder. Unfortunately, the finch’s left eye became infected, possibly due to Avian Pox. As a result, the finch lost its eye. However, the lesion area has scabbed over, and it appears to be healing. Despite this unfortunate incident, the finch doesn’t seem to be too skinny and may have a good chance of surviving the winter.

Recovering Finch

Six days later, the lesion area has scabbed over. The finch appears to have lost its left eye, but otherwise seems healthy.

The same thing happened to a house finch that frequents my balcony/feeder in Northern CA! It had a huge growth on its eye for weeks due to Avian Pox, but it fell off along with its eye. It seems to be healthy now, eating normally and flying without issue. I wonder how to the whole eye fell out though, seems excruciating.
