Diseased Bird: Gila woodpecker with missing or broken upper beak
Additional images:
Gila woodpecker missing or broken upper beak. He spends all day at my suet feeder, I’m assuming because it’s easy for him to eat. His tongue flies around because the beak isn’t there to hold it in. She has some dark marks on her forehead/front top of head so that might be related to an injury? In all of the pictures you can see the dark tongue that’s sometimes blurry from constant movement and in some the pink inside of the lower beak. I feel really bad for her. I’ve seen her on the side of a tree support stake in our backyard lightly tapping the wood with her bottom beak, seeming to wonder why she can’t peck into it. I’ve seen her scooping water with her bottom beak to drink from my bird water bowl.
