San Antonio TX. A female Great Tail Grackle came to my bird bath 2x today. She had lumpy, wort or tumor like growths around the base of her beak. Her left eye was consumed by the condition. I could only see where the eye aught to be. Is this the same disease that House Finches get?
She hung out by the bird bath for over 20 minutes.
Hi Bonnie, Birds can contract a multitude of different diseases. What you’re describing sounds like it could be Avian Pox – so far, only members of the finch family have been reported to get Mycoplasmal conjunctivitis (aka House Finch Eye Disease). Anytime you see a sick bird, it’s best to clean your feeders, and you should continue doing so regularly in order to help prevent the spread of disease.
