Sick Bird: One legged robin

  1. I spotted one a few days ago (5/1/25) in my back yard. I feed the birds several times daily and they have the timing down to the minute! They get raisins, some tossed out grapes for special treats, and unsalted shelled peanuts. I saw this robin a few times, hopping along differently than how the other robins with 2 legs moved, and I thought it was odd, thought maybe it had an injured leg, but yesterday I got a very good view of it and there is only one leg, and he hops on it. Gets around well and looks nice and healthy with a nice round belly. I think it might be a female because the red breast is less bright than some of the bigger robins, and the other feathers are more like a dark gray than tending to black like the bigger robins with very red breasts. Never saw this before! I’ve been throwing out raisins and peanuts for the robins (other birds eat them too) for about 5 years, and I think it’s the “children” of other robins who have been here and stay the entire summer nesting around the neighborhood and come back yearly. Mother Nature never fails to amaze me.
