Diseased Bird: Spotted towhee w/ 2 tumors
First time ever to see a spotted towhee in our backyard. It has two tumors, one on its right foot and one under its bill. It still seems active. It appeared yesterday and today. Will continue to monitor and take pictures as long as we see it.

Spotted a towhee with a growth protruding from eye about 1cm. Has been feeding in an open lawn and has been hanging around our chicken coop. Was able to catch by hand. I released and it flew away.
Hi Steve, Anytime you see a sick bird, it’s best to take your feeders down and clean them. Cleaning them regularly (every 1-2 weeks) is the best way to prevent disease, even when you see no sick birds. You can learn more about bird diseases and how best to clean your feeders on our website. Please also note that it is against federal law to handle to treat wild birds without a federal permit. If you’re particularly worried about an individual, the best thing to do is to call a local wildlife rehabilitator before taking action. If you’re not sure who that is, your state’s wildlife office should have a list of rehabilitators that are federally certified.
I have notice 3 different Towhees in my yard with the same tumors but are dead. What’s happening,?
And forget calling or going to the Audubon society – no help there.
