Description
This is a juvenile Scissortail Flycatcher. Last Fall I was walking my property with my cameras , as I often do , when I spotted the young Fly Catcher on the fence. As I was Photographing him, an unsuspecting grasshopper flew by and was snatched out of the air by this Scissor Tail. I have the next photo of him munching away on the grass hopper., I was so excited I could hardly wait to get back and see it on the computer.

Beautiful capture!
Congrats…this is a ‘nice catch’ for both of you! Love these birds! When we lived in Shawnee Mission, Kansas in 1970-71 mom took us for rides in the evening to see these beautiful birds!
Thanks, Lori
I loved seeing scissortails up in the Panhandle, when I was growing up in Texas in the 60’s and 70’s. Fabulous photo – congratulations!!
Wow it’s beautiful!
OMG! This is the most amazing photo imaginable. Any chance of seeing the munching follow-up shot?
This photo is actually hard for me to believe.
First, it’s hard to believe that, unless you encountered a swarm of grasshoppers, a single one would fly directly to a bird perched on a wire, one who had merely to open its mouth to receive its highly cooperative prey. Was this grasshopper hovering in flight in front of the bird? Highly unusual.
Second, it’s hard for me to believe that you just happened to click your shutter at the exact moment of this almost unheard-of event. Were you shooting a burst of photos at the time, of which this appeared as the most auspicious of the bunch?
Please share a few more details.
