Description
Third time (and third day) was finally the charm with the exceedingly paparazzi-shy Band-Tailed Pigeons. Normally up in the mountains at this time of the year, a small, late-migrating nonet of these forest pigeons wandered the backyard for three weeks in May and June 2017 (almost succeeding, on one occasion, in taking down one of the larger bird feeders when they all fed at the same time!)
Unlike the Eurasian Collared Doves, these Band-Tailed Pigeons were very quiet, and when they vocalized, their calls were subdued by comparison. More often than not, we would hear the flapping of their wings when they took off to roost in the 100-foot tall Douglas Firs, but this one finally consented to having its photo taken through a window.
