In the dead of winter, it’s not uncommon for birds to differ in their opinions as to whose claim over the suet takes precedence. In a one-on-one contest, a Starling stands no chance against a Hairy Woodpecker, who will drive a single bird off the feeder with a bit of angry screeching and a few well-placed jabs with his beak. This morning, though, a couple of Starlings were desperate, and ganged up to assert their dominance, literally kicking the Hairy off the suet.
