Description

This male Pileated Woodpecker was attracted to a maple tree in my yard this past spring after a giant limb had fallen off. I observed it several days in a row while it worked away hunting for ants and in the process, excavating huge holes in the tree and making quite the pile of wood chips on the ground. Rather than taking the tree down, my husband and I have decided to leave it for the birds who might use it as a food source or a nesting site.
