Winter came early this year – by the first week of November our local lake was completely iced over. One morning I found a flock of about 50 Trumpeter Swans resting on the ice quite close to shore. Many of the swans were sleeping, others keeping watch, but there was also a fair amount of coming and going – some would take off and leave and others flew in to join the group. Trumpeter Swans are enormous, and it takes a fair bit of effort for them to take off from a frozen lake. Similarly, the landings were often far from graceful. The picture shows an immature bird coming in to join the group. We are lucky to have such magnificent creatures living locally and I was very grateful for the opportunity to watch and photograph them.
