Unusual Bird: Male Northern Cardinal with plumage deformity

These are photos of a male Northern Cardinal that was present in our yard for several weeks recently. It has a deformity in plumage on the left posterior aspect of his head, extending to the back. Unsure what this represents. His behavior was no different than the other birds.
