Hi Carole, This bird is a Northern Flicker, likely with a condition called Melanism. Melanism occurs when there is excessive deposition of the melanin pigment in the bird’s feathers. It’s similar to Leucism and Albinism, which are conditions describing the absence of pigment, though melanism occurs much less often. You can learn more about color variance in birds here.

  1. Just saw a very similar bird at my back porch feeder. Looks just like a flicker but black with the white under its tail. Very interesting.

  2. There was a rather dark flicker at my feeder yesterday afternoon (coastal Massachusetts), but it still had bright red at the back of its head

  3. This AM, in Arabela (Lincoln Cnty), NM, I saw, for the first time, a VERY dark Flicker. We expect it will come to our feeder a few feet from our window where we should get a closer look. It is the earliest a Flicker has arrived here, and usually the Fall and Winter numbers are about 10-12 Red-shafteds. While most of the Flickers are acclimated migrants accustomed to our place (and move right in), we might see more strangers this year due to wildfires in Canada.

  4. I saw a similar bird in Seattle, October. In a blue spruce tree. Dark black/brown back, head, wings, neck and stomach, but bright white leg feathers, breaches, with black polka dotts.

  5. I just saw a flock of about 10 to 15+ very dark northern flickers in my back yard. They also seem to be bigger than the normal size that I’ve seen in Pinellas county Florida. The date is July 19, 2024. I didn’t have my phone to take a picture and they flew away fast when a blue Jay yelled at them. They seemed very skittish.

  6. July and august i had a black wood pecker or flicker visit my platform feeder regularly. Hewas the size of a red belly woodpecker with 3 white bars on each lower wing. The underneath was dark grey. It perfered peanuts and was somewhat shy around other birds. I did not identify of the flicker body markings. Definately from woodpecker family with tree climbing behavior. I dont know what it is but beautiful bird, good natured and fun to watch. It is gone and i miss watching the behavior this most distinguished bird. Maybe someone can put a name on it. My heart would smile if it came back. My best to you bird folks and keep looking for that special bird that excites your day! Thanks Jim
