Congratulations to our first two winners of the 2014-2015 BirdSpotter photo contest sponsored by Vanguard! The theme for the first week was “Creative Feeders”. For the first time ever, we have two weekly winners: a People’s Choice and a Judges’ Choice winner!
Diane Marshman of New Milford, PA won the People’s Choice award with this vibrant photo of a male Baltimore Oriole at an orange feeder.
A fruit feeder is a great way to attract different birds to your feeder site! Find out what birds are attracted to fruit in your area by using our Common Feeder Birds interactive. Diane says, “I think the Baltimore Orioles are one of the most beautiful birds and I try attracting them to the yard with different food. They seem to love it and visit them regularly until they have their babies, then I do not see much of them until the following year. I also put pieces of string out in trees that they gather for their nest building.”
Gary Meuller of Rolla, MO won our vote for the first week’s Judges’ Choice award. It doesn’t get much more creative than Gary’s combination of whimsical and practical with this Lego feeder! (And the White-breasted Nuthatch isn’t bad either!)
Gary was inspired by our first week’s theme and built this feeder just for the contest! He explains, “the week 1 category “Creative Feeders” prompted my idea of using LEGOs, which kids of all ages can relate to, as the material to construct my creative feeder. Once finished I put the feeder on a pole and within 15 minutes both nuthatches and chickadees jumped on my LEGO feeder “like ducks on a June bug.”
These photos inspired us, and we hope they inspire you to get creative with your feeders, too!
The secondweek of our BirdSpotter Photo Contest will be open for submissions and voting this Wednesday, November 2th! This week’s theme is “Hummingbirds,” we only want to see your best photos of hummingbirds! This week’s contest starts today Wednesday, November 212th and runs through Sunday, November 16th.
