An American marten could not resist the allure of a suet feast! Congratulations to Bob Steventon of Prince George, British Columbia, our final BirdSpotter Judges’ Choice award winner. His amazing photo certainly hit the mark for the category, The Not-so-usual Suspects.
According to Bob, “this marten had no trouble making the jump from the trunk of a large Douglas Fir to the feeder hanging from one of its branches. We load the feeder with chunks of fat and fatty bones. The marten was a frequent visitor in the winter of 2015-16.”
Martens are solitary animals, avoiding their own kind except during breeding season. These petite mammals are found in mature conifer-dominated forests throughout the northern United States and Canada.
