Bathed in the sunlight of a November afternoon, this White-breasted Nuthatch seemed to pose for its portrait. A tangle of thin branches in the background looked almost abstract in the bright light. In spite of this poetic atmosphere, the nuthatch was simply waiting for its turn at a busy birdfeeder in the local Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. When the chance presented itself, it quickly went for the food.
