After announcing his presence with loud chirps, the red-bellied woodpecker inches backwards down the cedar elm tree in my backyard to reach the bark butter that I craftily applied to entice him into photographic range. After he’s had his fill, he either scoots back up the tree, or sometimes, as in this instance takes off and flies swiftly away. Either way, he’s a joy to watch.
