Description

This Hairy Woodpecker looks to me likes he’s wondering if he should have just one more bite of the suet cake. Commonly misidentified with the Downy Woodpecker, the Hairy Woodpecker is both larger in size and beak then the Downy Woodpecker. Unless they are side by side it can be hard to distinguish the two. The Hairy prefers woods where it can get its favorite food of wood-boring insects and larvae and many other insects. I don’t often see them throughout summer but by winter they can be seen waiting their turn at the suet feeders usually occupied by the Downy’s and the Red-bellied Woodpecker.
