Texas Bird Family says:

Common Nighthawk. Note the bird is brown, the belly is white, and the brown underwing with white spot.

It sounded and flew like a jay/woodpecker, but it looks like a Common Nighthawk.
A Common Nighthawk (or similar species) has been seen once since flying over the robins.

Hmm. I would listen to the sounds of all the nightjar-like birds in your area. (I don’t really know about Canada birds.)
