Description

I, have often watched Young birds using and closing the nictating membrane when non-family birds of the same species came close.. This was my first time.. watching this as a protective reactive measure in starlings during the latest winter storm..
Forgive me if the pictures are not clear. but, in the first picture, of the same said bird,, you can see.. that this bird was not blind.. I, noticed him, using the nictating membrane to protect its eyes.. am I wrong?

Looked it up in the dictionary, “A transparent third eyelid that serves to keep the eye clean & moist when blinking. Wished I had a better answer for you……..Aleene

Again, many thanks Aleene,, today, was rough,, trying to keep a bird alive..
results..fantastic,,
Only can say,, that CKRANKY, the babe starling,, kept me studying,, his early life..
wild,, and documented,, and would only show his 3rd eyelid,, with all other birds..
and he, taught me. alot..(summer 2017).
The 3rd eyelid,, has to be studied more, and not just water birds have this capacity,,
You have indeed answered Aleene, more than you imagine,,
As our comments ,, thoughts, observations.. are taken seriously.. and have educational and research content..
Aleene,, the fact ,, that you took the time to look up.. answers.. means more than you can imagine..
