Description

I live on acreage amongst tall pines and towering oaks in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The perfect habitat for the Acorn Woodpecker. I have a large Acorn family on my property. The Acorns have excavated a nest in the top of this power pole, which they have used on and off for years. There are often two or three Acorns watching over the fledglings. They also have a small granary and nest on the Power Pole that’s in my pasture. Their best granaries on my property and the neighboring property are in the tall Ponderosa Pines. So far I’ve found 3 large granaries.

Unlike the Red-Breasted Sapsucker, the Acorns here are very shy of humans. It’s hard to get a good shot of them. As soon as they spot you – even if they’re 75 feet up a tree – they take off!

Good shot Pamela! We used to have a number of these over in Skyridge where I live. Not so many now that it has built up. Thanks for representing our area!
