Description

My name is Lydia and I am 11 years old. My family and I are members of Bluebirds Across Nebraska, which is an organization dedicated to increasing the population of bluebirds across Nebraska. In the year 2013, my family adopted two bluebird trails, one at Platte River State Park and the other at Louisville State Recreation Area, both near my hometown of Elmwood, NE. We monitored 48 bluebird boxes, on a weekly basis, helping to keep predators and invasive bird species out. We also kept the nesting boxes in good repair and recorded how many bluebird eggs were laid and how many bluebirds fledged. By the end of the season, we had successfully fledged 93 Eastern Bluebirds. The photo that I am submitting is of the very first Eastern Bluebird that I have ever seen. We were monitoring our bluebird trail and he was perched on a tree, by himself, over one of the nesting boxes. When I checked the box, I noticed there were 5 bluebird eggs inside. The daddy bluebird was being very attentive to his mate, his nest and his eggs. Isn’t he the most handsome thing you have ever seen?
