Description

My wife and I planned a vacation around Las Vegas so that we could see some of the local birds. We were not able to go during the best season, but arrived several weeks after most of the birds had moved on. On the day we went to Mt. Charleston it was raining. We hiked around for over an hour and only saw one Jay–no other birds, although we had read that the area we were in was very good. Somewhat discouraged, we went back to our car and started to drive out. As we were approaching the gate we saw a Rock Wren and a chipmonk just a few feet away. We were very excited and stopped the car to take some photos. Both animals were very cooperative. Then we started to notice other birds in the area, including the hermit thrush in the photo. It turned out to be a good day after all!
