Description

Common Loons on Killarney Lake in Killarney Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada: I was fortunate to be invited to go with my best friend to Killarney Lake on a good paddle trip. The canoe made it possible for us to quietly approach this little family where I took a few, precious pictures. They are remarkably handsome with jewel-like red eyes and they have an eery, yet beautiful, mournful call that echos across the clear lakes of the northern wilderness. In summer, the adults are regally patterned in black and white, changing to a plain gray above and white below in winter. They are superb divers and are fiercely territorial when breeding. Typically, they come ashore only to nest. —Clearly, there’s nothing “common” about the Common Loon.
