Description

Another Flicker – boring. Not so, however, when viewed up close – the feathering is beautiful and, in this case, interesting. This bird has the red malar of a male Red-shafted Flicker, but it also has a pale red nape crescent of the Yellow-shafted Flicker – i.e., an Intergrade between the two sub-species (forms). Denver is within the contact area for the two sub-species, and as a result, intergrades are not uncommon but you have to take a close look.
