Description

I caught this magnificent Red-tailed Tropicbird soaring over his nest site on a cliff at the Kīlauea Point
National Wildlife Refuge in Kauai, Hawaii. A pelagic bird of the Pacific, it only comes to shore for a few months each year to nest on a handful of Hawaiian islands. Protected by a predator-proof fence, the Refuge is one of the few places where these gorgeous birds still nest successfully.
