It was a rough spring for Purple Martins in Manitoba, cold wind, snow and rain kept them from feeding on the wing. It was a great opportunity to develop a trusting relationship with these Martins. We started with flipping crickets, only a couple of attempts to feed on the first day. The next day they all caught on and cleaned me out of crickets. The following day I switched over to microwaved eggs, and they loved them. Soon after, we transitioned to a stationary platform. It did not take long before they began self feeding. Over the summer they let me know when they were hungry. They would fly straight at me and squawk to give me the message. They would also line up on the utility wire and wait for me to get home from work, so that I would feed them. It was such a fun experience.
