Description

While on a guided tour of the Green Wood Cemetery with birder Rob Jett, we spotted this Red-tailed Hawk patiently perched on a tree stump focused on whatever prey was hidden from view within the stump. The two of us gingerly moved in to about 15 feet or so from him, the hawk completely ignored us, too engrossed. He seemed deep in thought as if he were contemplating, Should I eat him now or wait a little longer? I thought that rather than submitting one of the several shots I have of hawks in the midst of eating their prey, this image captures the essence of the bird’s awesome power and expresses its intention without showing the gruesome act itself.

Cogito ergo…hawk.

It is not every day you happen upon an authentic philosoraptor, nevermind photographing him in the act. A winning photograph if there is a ‘rational’ judge among them!

Awesome shot and perfect title!
