Description

This was a totally unexpected encounter. I have this really simple feeder – I live in an urban area – with peanuts in it. I usually get sparrows, chickadees, red-breasted nuthatches and downy woodpeckers coming to feed. On October 23, 2015, my husband excitedly screamed (yes, he did) for me to look out the window at the feeder. I was so shocked to see a bird of this size and this species. As you can see, he’s larger than the feeder. We quickly looked him up to find a name and found out this is a Pileated Woodpecker. I was surprised he would find the peanuts interesting – he sampled some. He stayed at the feeder long enough for me to capture several images of him in several poses. I’m happy the photos turned out not too bad despite having been shot through the window glass in quick succession.
