Description

In late May the Ptarmigan change their plumage from winter white to summer brown. During the transition they are even more tame than usual, which allowed me to get this close-up of the male bird.

Lucky you for being able to get close enough to get this great photo. I think the shot is lovely with the light background.

Great close-up.

I did not know that there were any Ptarmigan’s in the lower 48. Your photo inspired me to do a little research, so I checked Sibley’s Guide to BIrds.

I now know where the three different species can be seen. I see the white-tailed species is only found in a few places in the lower 48. A rare bird for sure. You are fortunate to live near their habitat in Colorado.
