Description

This was a really fun encounter with an ‘old friend.’ I have observed
a pair (presumably the same birds) of Great Crested Flycatchers
in this area for 5 years in row. They have used the same nest cavity
each year and I am always glad to see them. On this day, this female
had found a hawk feather and proceeded to parade around a small
area maybe 1/2 acre in size making the strangest noises I have
ever heard from this specie; there was also an almost ‘gleeful bounce’
in her actions as if to say to everyone, ‘look at what I found!’ After about
20 minutes of this routine, she finally took her prize into their nest cavity
and then got back to other business. The photo of this encounter always
brings me a chuckle.
