Description

Good morning,

I’m new to Project FeederWatch and bird watching in general and was hoping you could help me identify a hawk.

This past Sunday at approximately 9:15 am a hawk flew into a tree in the woods behind our backyard birdfeeder. It stay more or less motionless for 15+ minutes, then flew off. The entire time it was there, the BlueJays were screaming at it, and a squirrel crawled up the tree within a foot of it, then scampered back down. It was difficult to get a clear view because it was partially hidden behind some branches. it was “stocky” and its back was marbled with white and dark black/brown spot or patches.

A few hours later, it returned to a tree much closer to the bird feeder. My wife took a picture of it but the quality is questionable. Would you be able to identify the hawk based upon the attachment?

FYI. A few years back we had a nest of red shouldered hawks in the woods behind our house, so I’m assuming it might be one.

Thank you
