Tufted Titmouse Greets The Dawn

Kathy Dempsey says:

Is it possible for a tufted titmouse to be in Northern California? I have a small bird, tufted, that visits my bird feeder occasionally. I only see one so it may be a single bird or more than one that don’t visit together. It seems to be a brownish color, darker on the head and back.

Holly Faulkner, Project Assistant says:

Hi Kathy, Tufted Titmice are found only in the eastern United States. However, other titmice species live in the West: Oak Titmice and Juniper Timice, which used to be considered the same species in the past (the Plain Titmouse). According to their range maps, you most probably have an Oak Titmouse, as Juniper Titmice only scarcely visit the northeast corner of California – they live more commonly in the interior of the country. Click on the species links I shared above to learn more and view range maps.
