This photo shows a Male Red-Bellied Woodpecker in an all-out attack on a Starling trying to feed from the suet feeder. I took a series of photos of this encounter. At first, the woodpecker was knocked off the feeder by the Starling, who flew into the yard and blind-sided the woodpecker on the feeder! Fortunately, it was not injured.

In this photo the Red-bellied Woodpecker has flown back up to the feeder and is mounting a successful attack that drove the Starling away. Neither bird was injured.
