Description

I was watching the juvenile Red Crossbill trying to pry a nut out of the pine cone. The male was nearby, investigating his own pine cone. As soon as the juvenile was successful, the male flew off his branch, narrowly missing landing on the juvenile, and claimed the other’s pine cone for himself. I really love the stink-eye he’s giving the juvenile, who you can see has kept hold of the pine nut as he flew away. We have been really lucky that there have been so many Red Crossbills in the area this winter!
