Goldfinches are well known for plucking the petals off composite flowers in order to eat their seeds. I always make sure to have plenty of blooming tickseed, zinnia and cosmos plants in my summer garden because I love watching these little thieves at work. But I had never seen before (or heard of) a goldfinch plucking away the petals of a garden rose, as this female was busy doing when I surprised her with my camera.
