Description
In February we went to visit our son in California, leaving behind a dreary Boston winter. As I was admiring the huge strelitzias in our hotel’s garden, bordering the pool, I noticed this tiny female hummingbird (Allen’s or Rufous) sipping nectar flower to flower. It came and left several times, increasingly used to my presence to the point of letting me take some close-up pictures while it was resting on the spathe of a flower. It looked like it was posing for me!

Beautiful little one. Great portrait shot!
Thanks, Theresa! It was a new and really exciting experience for me. In California I “learned to see” tiny hummingbirds and this summer, for the first time, I was able to spot a couple of dozens of young ruby-throated hummingbirds here in the Boston area.
